Northern Region and Monteverde
The Northern Region stands out internationally for the Arenal
Volcano, its Mountain Range of Tilarán, the Monteverde Cloud Forests and
Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. From January to the end of April the
temperature in the lowlands of this region reaches 30ºC, making it
parts appropriate for travel. The Northern Zone has rainfall levels between
100 mm
and 400 mm
during the driest months of March and April. The maximum temperature in
some parts is 32ºC
and the minimum temperature in the highlands goes down to 12ºC.The humidity
ranges between 82 and 89%.January, February, March and April show the
sunniest days in this region.
The town of Sta. Elena has been
founded by Quaker families immigrating to Costa
Rica from the United States in 1951. They
came to Costa Rica
because of the fact that the country does not have a standing army and, in
many ways, supported their ideals. A dairy farm and associated cheese
factory now produce over a ton of cheese a day, and much of the 1,500 hectares
they purchased forty years ago is part of the famous Monteverde Cloud
forest reserve.
Starting point to all attractions of the region is the small town of
Sta. Elena,
located between the most important nature reserves, Santa Elena and
Monteverde . Most of the hotels and lodges are situated between the village of Sta. Elena, along the connecting
roads between both preserves.

The Arenal Lodge is situated
in the area of La
Fortuna de San Carlos in
the province of Alajuela 3 ½ hours northwest of San Jose. The view
to the volcano allows watching its eruptions and the effluence of the
lava. The lodge has 34 rooms combining standard, jr. suites, suites and
chalets.
The junior suites are
equipped with either one king size-bed (for 2 persons) or with two
queen-size beds or with two queen-size beds and one single-bed. All rooms
have private balcony with view to the volcano and are suitable for up to
4 persons.

Hotel Arenal Paraíso is
located 7 km
of La Fortuna. The
hotel offers 90 rooms which are situated in wooden bungalows in a
well-kept garden. The standard bungalows are equipped with private

terrace with a splendid view of the majestic Volcano El Arenal. The
Deluxe bungalows are more spacious and feature A/C, cable T.V. and a

the style of a pre-Colombian Indian village is located at the road

Finca Valverde is situated
approx. 2 km
outside of Santa Elena, in the Monteverde cloud forest region. The hotel
offers 22 rooms distributed on a property with many trees and a lot of
nature: Among the rooms offered, there are 10 rooms in Cabins, 8 Standard
Rooms and 4 Junior Suites. The standard rooms with private bathroom/hot
water showers are accessible over a suspended bridge. Set well apart one
from the other, on a wooded hillside, each Finca Valverde's five Cabins
enjoys its own private space. Every cabin houses two, separate guest
rooms which consist of a main bedroom and large bathroom with bathtub,
plus a sleeping loft. The Junior Suites are also accommodated in Cabins,
and come with private bathroom/bathtub, coffee maker, small refrigerator
and cable TV. Hotel facilities include a bar and restaurant serving
typical dishes.

La Selva Biological Station
(OTS)
La Selva Biological Station, located about 3km south of Puerto
Viejo de Sarapiquí, offers next to guided hikes through the private
reserve La Selva
which is attached to the Station also simple accommodation either in
shared bedrooms with shared bathroom or in 6 extra cabinas (built in 2003)
which all feature private bathroom, ceiling fan, desk and balcony.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served at the cafeteria of the Station at
preassigned times.

The 50 rooms are
constructed and designed with floors of Italian ceramics, ample baths
with Italian tiles, walls of concrete and wood, artesian flat sky. Sky
fan with incorporated lamp, bath with hot water are equipped with
conditioned air, the furniture are made up of two double beds, two tables
at night, pull with four chairs and comfortable. All rooms have a view to
the volcano. There are two Suites with panoramic view available.

river about 15 minutes by car from Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, la Quinta offers 26

butterfly - and a poison dart frog garden as well as a souvenir shop.
Vegetables are cultivated in the Finca which belongs to the hotel. The
hotel is personally managed by a committed Costa Rican family. A small
museum exhibits findings of pre Colombian times as well as part of the
famous insect collection of Richard Whitten.

The Lodge is located in a
remote virgin forest area of more than 2,471 acres at
the eastern side of the Braulio
Carillo National
Park. The
"Waterfall-Lodge" comfortabel, rustic Lodge with eight
rooms. Every room has a bathhroom with hot water. There is also a
balcony with a beautiful view. The lodge is located about 200 m from a
waterfall.

in the center of La
Fortuna, San
Carlos. The hotel offers 30 rooms with private
bathroom, hot water and air conditioning as well as a separate
accommodation with four rooms (with ceiling fans) for families and student

whirlpool and a gym are offered to the guests. There are green areas
