SOUTH
PACIFIC HOTELS
The South Pacific Region stretches
between Quepos in the North down to the Osa
Peninsula and border to Panama, bordered by the Talamanca Mountain
Range with its highest Peak in Costa Rica, the Cerro
Chirripó. Main parts of this region are hardly explored for tourism
and visitors mainly are focusing on Drake
Bay and the Corcovado National Park.
Coastal Vegetation is dominated by lowland rain forests reaching close to
the vast and wild beaches, often interrupted by huge oil palm, banana and
pineapple plantations. The average yearly precipitation in this area is
about 5000 mm.
To visit the South Pacific
Region, a domestic flight to Palmar Norte, Golfito or Puerto Jimenez should
be taken into consideration or, interrupting the exhausting drive from San José, one or two overnights at the
beautiful Valle de Dota, home of the largest Quetzal populations in Central America.
Hotel Whales and Dolphins

Playa Nicuesa
Playa Nicuesa Rainforest Lodge embraces conservation and harmony with the natural environment, and offers a perfect blend of comfort with environmental preservation. This wilderness lodge is sensitively designed with the environment and constructed from naturally fallen trees, recycled materials and harnesses the natural energy from the sun to provide electricity.
What also makes Playa Nicuesa Rainforest Lodge so unique, pristine and private is that access from nearby villages is by water only. Dramatic views of the mountains surrounding the Pacific Coast gulf welcome you to the lodge as you approach by boat. Once you arrive at the lodge, lose yourself in the tropical paradise that surrounds you, and let the adventure begin!
We refer to Playa Nicuesa Rainforest Lodge as our "Selva y Mar" (jungle and sea) location because our front yard is literally a gulf right off the Pacific Ocean, and our back yard is literally thousands of acres of pristine tropical rainforest. Adventure and nature activities are unlimited!
The Front Door leads to the Golfo Dulce's 80 degree blue green waters. Kayak the Golfo Dulce (sweet gulf) right off our beach front. Jump in! The water is calm and perfect for swimming . Spend a relaxing hour or a challenging day kayaking and exploring along the coastline and through nearby mangroves. Stop and snorkel along the way! In-shore and off-shore fishing guarantee a fresh fish dinner. And, from the Golfo Dulce we can also access several rivers and the Pacific Ocean leading to a variety of marine environments that make this area so unique.
The Back Door of our 165-acre preserve is surrounded by thousands of acres of pristine tropical rainforest, full of fruit trees and tropical flowering plants. Explore the jungle by hiking our labyrinth of trails that wind through the rainforest canopy, up the mountainside, and connect through the National Park. Listen to the howler monkeys, watch and hear the calls of any one of the 250 species of birds, and end up at a waterfall. OR, just relax in a hammock under the almond tree by the sea and take in the ocean and mountain views while listening to the rhythmic waves

Lapa Rios ****
Set in a private nature reserve spread over 1,000 acres of Central America's last remaining lowland tropical rainforest in Costa Rica, Lapa Rios Ecolodge overlooks the pristine point where the Golfo Dulce meets the wild Pacific Ocean, making it the destination that matches every one's idea of paradise.
Lapa Rios was built by John and Karen Lewis as a private nature reserve. A Minnesota couple driven by a vision, John and Karen liquidated all their assets to finance the purchase of a large tract of rainforest and to build the small supporting tourism project. Today a conservation easement elaborated by The Nature Conservancy and Cederena ensure that this rainforest will be preserved into perpetuity. The Lapa Rios reserve is connected through a corridor with Corcovado National Park on the Osa Peninsula.
Lapa Rios is built in harmony with the surrounding forest and beach environment. The main lodge and bungalows line three ridges connected by walking paths and steps. Built over 350 feet above the sea, Lapa Rios catches the cooling tropical breezes. The main lodge, housing the restaurant and bar , soars 50 feet and is built of local, natural materials. Palm thatched roofs meet a three-story hardwood circular stairway . Climb to overlook the forest canopy and breathtaking ocean vistas . Comfortable, locally made bamboo furniture adds to relaxation in this tranquil panorama of nature.
Lapa Rios is an ideal vacation experience for people that like nature and are open to learning about conservation, culture and biodiversity. Honeymoon couples looking for a more active and unique kind of experience as well as families with older children that are looking to spend some real quality time together also enjoy the experience. Think of yourself as a traveler and not a tourist when coming to Lapa Rios. Feel free to explore our website and hopefully some time soon we will be able to share our vision with you.
