OUTDOOR RECREATION - Diving
Companies
Scuba diving in Costa Rica is on the
rise and there are now quite a few dive areas on the Pacific coast.
These areas do offer professional dive services including top
quality dive boats and dive shops. The Pacific Coast does not have
much, if any, coral reefs or live coral but these waters do offer
abundant marine life and the ocean is very warm

Costa Rica is known for its wildlife and marine life falls into this
category. Most dive spots are around rock formations a good distance
away from the mainland shore. Beach dives don’t exist because of the
large number of rivers and estuaries and the potentially large surf.
One dive spot that is by far the most
popular and most spectacular is Isla del Coco or Coco Island. It is
known for the divers’ ability to encounter sharks, rays and sea
turtles. This island is not close to land but is well worth the 2
day journey it takes to get there.
The Caribbean Coast is much less
developed but there are coral reefs off the coast. Scuba Diving
shops are starting to pop up here and there.
OUTDOOR RECREATION -
SURFING
Point breaks, beach breaks, perfect
lefts and rights, reefs and river mouths, warm water and waves year
round make is what defines Costa Rica surfing and has but Costa Rica
on the surfers map. Some beaches may be hard to get to but are
totally uncrowded, although they are getting harder to find, and
even the easily accessible ones tend to be much less crowded than
the beaches of Hawaii, Southern California, and Sydney.
Costa Rica surfing can get very good
and sometimes the size can be huge. Some breaks, namely Pavones,
have some of the longest rides in the world and is definitely worth
the long trek to get there.
Most surfers bring multiple boards,
however I would warn do not limit your mobility by bringing too many
boards. Getting around can sometimes be quite a challenge with a lot
of luggage. If something does happen to your board, either on the
flight or while you are in Costa Rica surfing, there are quite a few
people or shops willing to fix your board for a price. Some of the
popular towns, like Tamarindo have some pretty large surf shops with
all the amenities that you find at home. All of this does come with
a price. I once bought a FCS key for $5 in Tamarindo, however
without this I could not get my fins on and the shops do take
advantage of this.
If you decide to travel by air make
sure you double check with the local airline if they accept boards.
Sansa usually does accept them, up to a certain length and out of
the board bag, for an extra charge, however Nature Air sometimes
does not even take them. On a flight to Tambor (Mal País) I had to
abandon my board, luckily I had a friend in San José that picked up
my board. Because of this most people on Costa Rica surfing trips do
rent cars. Make sure you bring your own soft racks and straps as
most rental cars don’t have these.
