OUTDOOR RECREATION - Sport
Fishing
Costa Rica Sportfishing is world
class and has been well known in the Sportfishing industry for many
years. Because of this most of the Costa Rica Sportfishing companies
in enforce a strict catch-and-release policy. They do understand
sustainable tourism and want to conserve the level of fish in the
waters off of Costa Rica.
Sportfishing on the Pacific Coast is strikingly different than
Sportfishing on the Caribbean Coast. The Pacific is known for its
Blue Marlin and the best season for this fish is from May – July.
However this fish can be found year round in the Pacific waters.
Dorado is also another Sportfishing catch. Its season follows that
of Blue Marlin.
In general, the fish move seasonally, with May - September offering
the best catches in the Golfo de Papagayo (Tamarindo to Playa
Flamingo), while November to March are the best in southern waters
centered on the Golfo Dulce (Golfito) and Puerto Quepos.
Costa Rica’s northern Caribbean coast is also known for its
Sportfishing near Tortuguero and Barra del Colorado. Tarpon or the
“Silver Bullet” is one of the most aggressive largest fishes in
these waters. Tarpon can weight up to 135 lbs (60 kg) and can be
quite a challenge for even the most seasoned Sportfisher. Snook is
also a popular fish caught here it is much smaller than the Tarpon
but it also a very aggressive fish and can put up a good fight. The
Snook can weight up to 25-30 lbs. Most of the Costa Rica
Sportfishing on the Caribbean is done in the surrounding rivers,
estuaries, and larger lagoons. Cano Negro also know for Tarpon and
Snook.
Laguna de Arenal near Volcan Arenal
is renowned for its Guapote or Rainbow Bass.
There are packages for all levels of
fishers; from the professional to the beginner. Full and half day
packages are available as well as packages exclusively for Costa
Rica Sportfishing vacations.
