WHAT TO SEE?
The Tirimbina Rainforest Center of Wisconsin
and Sarapiquí
The mission of TRC is:
-
To preserve an endangered
tropical forest ecosystem and its biological diversity;
-
To develop a unique educational
resource that fosters understanding of the interrelatedness of
life on Earth through the process of scientific investigation;
-
To provide research opportunities
in temperate/tropical ecology, biodiversity, and forest
restoration.
In late 1994, the Milwaukee Public
Museum and Riveredge Nature Center agreed to jointly sponsor
acquisition of 300 hectares (750 acres) of the Tirimbina tropical
rainforest in the Sarapiquí region of northeastern Costa Rica for
preservation and for developmentof innovative education and research
opportunities. Both MPM and RNC have long histories of high quality
educational programming in biological analysis, ecology, and the
environment, emphasizing both local/regional and global perspectives.
Tirimbina Rainforest Center is a
501(c)3 nonprofit corporation that operates in Costa Rica and
develops program with participation from the two member institutions.
Funds are raised through private donations.
TRC is a resource for teachers,
school groups, ecotourists, and scientists from Wisconsin and
elsewhere to explore matters of biological diversity, preservation
and Costa Rican culture. At the Centro Neotrópico Sarapiquís in
Costa Rica, on work trips to the reserve, and through workshops and
curriculum offered in Wisconsin, TRC offers exceptional experience-based
education opportunities.
